Not On Your Latte

You don’t fall for a man you’ve just met, never seen without a mask, or shared the same space with ONCE. Especially when you don’t even know his real name.

Under Remi Chastain’s “I don’t need a man” exterior hides a woman with a long-buried secret. She’s been hurt badly and has no desire for an encore, especially when it comes to her complicated history with love. Her experience was fraught with enough betrayal, infidelity, the worst form of low-life snake any one woman should have to experience, and a broken engagement to last her a lifetime.

Titus Wells is a work hard and reap the rewards kind of guy. He’s always been steadfast, with a loyal heart, a charismatic countenance, and an abundance of kindness to match. When his path crosses that of a dark-haired beauty with whiskey-colored eyes, her sharp wit and engaging personality bring out an attraction that will test every shred of willpower he has to remain the perfect Southern gentleman his mama raised.

This gun-shy girl needs to buy some time, sixteen days to be exact, and keep her focus on the prize… one event that will make every sacrifice worth the effort. She does not need to jump into anything with a man she just met at a masquerade, even if he makes her heart beat faster with every look. So what if he’s the first thing that’s given her hope for the male species in years…that doesn’t mean history won’t repeat itself. And she’s not sure she can survive heartbreak a second time.

Author’s Note: Slow burn. Second chances. Glorious, witty banter. Small-town vibes. Big, sensitive, sweet, softie of a hero. Gun-shy, nervous as a filly, heart-protecting heroine who can’t help the things that come out of her mouth. Steam Level: Lava. Suspense: Anxiety-inducing. Feels: Big time rush.

Turning back to my companion, I found myself intrigued. “Shall we?”

“Oh, we definitely shall.” He said for my ears only.

“Why charming Will, you say the darndest things. Makes me wonder what will come out of your mouth next.” I bit my lip, enjoying the freedom to flirt from behind a mask, saying things I normally wouldn’t on a dare.

“Perhaps I should be on my best behavior then.” He gave a little chuckle as he weaved through the groups of people in all their finery.

“Now, where’s the fun in that? I say, just be- well, yourself? Will.” I said with a smirk.

“You’re killing me here.” He said, laughing out loud this time, his smile wide.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw how attractive he was, even though only half of his face was visible. It made me wonder if he had laugh lines under his mask, and somehow thought so. I watched him from under my lashes as he led us through the maze, finally stopping to face me when we found ourselves in an opening. Other couples spun around us in a waltz. I felt a little shy now as I met his glance.

Will smiled, bowing low, again offering his hand, which I accepted before he pulled me into his arms. The butterflies swirled as we swayed in time, face to face. I pushed the nerves away and melted into his rhythm.

“Did you know they considered the waltz a scandalous dance in its time?” His eyes were mesmerizing, their green like a bright forest I could lose myself in.

“I did not. Why?” I said, my gaze locked with his.

“The dancers were so close, intimate, that it was improper. If we do this right, our bodies should barely touch. So close, we could share our warmth. Every part of us moving in sync, similar to other intimate acts.” His eyes were mischievous.

My breath caught as a heat infused my body, causing an unmistakable blush to my skin. Playing into it was the wisest course. “See? There you go again, saying things that make me flush.” My hand rested on his forearm. I could feel the muscles ripple beneath my fingers through his black tuxedo jacket, which made me wonder what kind of job he had since he was obviously in shape. I struck back. “Will, since every part of you I’ve touched to this point has been hard, what exactly do you do for a living? Or maybe you’re a gym rat instead?” I squeezed his forearm for emphasis.

He whistled low on an exhale. “Wow.” He shook his head for a moment as the music changed.
